Show Up and Show Off
You know that feeling when you're about to hit the stage for improv class? Excitement mixed with a dash of nerves, right? Well, I've got a mantra for you: "Show Up and Show Off!" Now, hold your applause, I'm not talking about being the improv diva stealing the spotlight – this is all about celebrating YOU.
The Fear of "Showing Off" – Let's Clear the Air:
Sometimes, there's this fear that "showing off" might come off as showboating, ignoring your partner, or even worse, making the scene all about you. But guess what? That's not what I mean by "show off." I mean show off to yourself. Believe that what you bring to the stage is not just good enough; it's absolutely brilliant and worthy of the spotlight.
Elevate Yourself, Elevate Your Scene:
"Showing off" isn't a solo act – it's a group number. When you bring your A-game, it lifts not only you but your scene partner and the whole darn class. It's like cranking up the improv dial to 11. It's about setting the bar high and watching everyone soar together.
Speaking of setting the bar high, a friend and former improv instructor of mine once shared her goal – to get her students to surpass her. That struck a chord with me. As an instructor, it's not my job to evaluate if you're "ready" for the next level. I don’t want to evaluate my students, I want to help elevate them. I want to see them reach their full potential, and I'm here to support them every step of the way.
The Collaborative Side of "Show Off":
As improvisers, we've all likely shared the stage with someone whose mission was to outshine everyone else. They crack jokes at their partner's expense, hog the spotlight, and basically play the improv diva. Well, that's not the "showing off" I'm talking about. Improv is a team sport. Our "showing off" needs to be a group effort. Show off your skills, sure, but more importantly, show off how amazing of a team player you are. Show off your ability to lift a struggling scene, bring joy to the stage, and support your fellow improvisers.
A Personal Touch:
On the first day of my Dynamic Characters class, I threw down the gauntlet – "Show Up and Show Off." And you know what? It worked like a charm. Empowered by the idea that they could bring their best to the table, my students made choices that led to breakthrough moments. It wasn't just about showcasing individual skills; it was about supporting one another and collectively creating something magical.
So, Playful people, let's make a pact. Show up for every class like it's opening night. Show off the incredible talent you bring to the stage, and let's create improv magic together.
